NZ Transport Agency Coastal Otago maintenance contract manager Nic Rodger said rocks fell on a section of State Highway 88, north of Forsyth Barr Stadium, yesterday.
A rock about 1m long landed on the highway about 100m east of Parry St on Thursday afternoon.
The rockfall site yesterday was closer to the city.A team of geotechnical engineers inspected the new rockfall site yesterday.
"At this stage, it appears to be relatively small rocks and debris loosened by the rain in this new site."
Crews would install rockfall warning signs and reduce the speed limit from 70kmh, to either 50kmh or 30kmh, before abseilers removed loose rocks next week.
Traffic management would ensure drivers and road users were protected, he said.
Agency crews operated "24/7" patrols and would check the site over the weekend, he said. Barriers and cones were not being placed at the side of the highway as the road was narrow and it could create hazards for cyclists and motorists, he said.
