The biggest thing to ever happen to Dunedin just got bigger.

Ed Sheeran today announced a third show at Forsyth Barr Stadium during his ÷ World Tour run in the city over Easter 2018.

The British singer's first two shows sold out in little more than 20 minutes, guaranteeing 80,000 fans will pack out the stadium on March 29 and 31.

Today he added an April 1 date for Dunedin. Tickets go on sale at 1pm on June 1.

Sheeran will also play three dates in Auckland at Mt Smart Stadium from March 24-26.

Three other stadium shows in Australia have also been added, bringing the Australasian leg of the tour to 18 stadium shows - the biggest stadium tour in Australian and New Zealand's history.

"I've always loved coming to Australia and New Zealand. So many amazing musicians have toured there and I am humbled to have broken these records,'' Sheeran said.

More than 900,000 tickets were expected to be sold across the 18-show run.

Michael Gudinski, head of Frontier Touring lauded the announcement: "This is now not only the biggest tour Frontier has promoted, but its the biggest tour in Australian and New Zealand touring history."

Dunedin Venues chief executive Terry Davies said it was an "unbelievable result" for the city and DVML to be part of the record-breaking event.

"The city will be a big winner, not to mention all of those fans.

"We thought selling out two concerts was an incredible achievement but for there to be a third Ed Sheeran concert under the roof, well I’m speechless - and that’s saying something!"

Extra flights

Air New Zealand has announced an extra 52 flights around New Zealand to get fans to Sheeran's six shows in Dunedin and Auckland.

An additional 35 flights to and from Dunedin would shuttle fans into the city for the concerts, Air New Zealand regional general manager direct and market development Jeremy O'Brien said.

There were also 17 flights to and from Auckland planned for the tour dates.

"The extra flights will provide more than 7100 additional seats for Ed Sheeran fans travelling to his concerts from throughout the country,'' he said.

"There's been huge demand for tickets, so we look forward to helping get fans to Auckland and Dunedin to see him perform.
