Members of the Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade work on extinguishing a small fire which ''took off'' in Newarp St yesterday.

Chief Fire Officer Graeme Ferguson said the landowner was attempting to burn a pile of rubbish on the property when it ''got away on him''.

''Unfortunately it's still very dry underfoot and it just took off.''

Two fire appliances were sent to the scene with eight crew members about 1.30pm.

Low-pressure hoses with foam were used on the fire.

Mr Ferguson said it took about 15 minutes to bring under control.

The landowner had his own fire protection but the blaze got ''away too quick''.

Mr Ferguson reminded others to be wary as it was still too dry to be lighting fires.
