A total of two months' home detention was imposed on a Maheno man when he appeared for sentence before Judge Paul Kellar in the Oamaru District Court yesterday on eight charges.
Two of the charges were having sex with an under-age girl.
Joshua John Chellew (22), fruit picker, admitted two separate charges of unlawful sexual connection witha 14-year-old girl between December 26 and February2.
He was sentenced to two months' home detention.
Judge Kellar imposed special conditions and post-detention conditions as part of the sentence.
Chellew's counsel, Michael de Buyzer, said the sex was consensual and came to light through entries the girl had made in her diary.
Chellew also admitted three charges of resisting a constable and one of assaulting a constable.
Chellew had refused to come out of a cell at the Oamaru Police Station on April 11 and had become aggressive.
On those charges, he was sentenced to one month's home detention, concurrent with the first sentence.
The remaining charge was burglary of the North Otago Golf Club on January 18, for which he was sentenced to two months' home detention, concurrent with the other terms.
On a charge of breaching a community work sentence, Chellew was convicted and discharged.
He was sentenced to 180 hours' community work for fines he owed and which would be remitted once that sentence was completed.
Judge Kellar said the most serious offences were the two unlawful sexual connections and the burglary.
Judge Kellar denounced the sexual connection offending and said the sentence had to be a deterrent for others.
Other convictions:
• Pauline Ratishma (19), student, of Oamaru, making a false statement of an indecent assault on June 4, six months' supervision with special conditions.
• Harley James Cunningham (20), of Oamaru, breaching community work sentence by leaving without an excuse, convicted and discharged with 47 hours community work still owing reimposed.
