Poor conditions limited Otago’s medal haul at the Canterbury championships.
Otago crews won eight medals before the regatta was cut short at Lake Ruataniwha at the weekend. After a delayed start yesterday, the regatta was eventually abandoned at 10.45am.
Columba College impressed in the coxed fours, claiming wins in both the women’s club and under-17 races. In the women’s club race, the crew of Millie Nesbit, Abby Anderson, Clora Quinlan-Thompson, Callie Turner and cox Megan Maslin won by nearly 17sec. They finished in 8min 07.57sec to beat Avon Rowing Club.
In the under-17 race, Amber Cunningham, Anderson, Ellen Foley, Millie Wright and cox Maslin claimed a narrower but still convincing win. The crew finished in 4min 14.71sec, ahead of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in 4min 19.71sec.
The North End Rowing Club accounted for four medals, including a gold in the men’s coxed under-16 eight. It finished in 3min 38.72sec, ahead of St Bede’s College crew in 3min 42.10sec.
The club claimed second in the novice double sculls and third in the coxed four and coxless quadruple sculls.
Oamaru Rowing Club secured the region’s other gold in the men’s club coxless quadruple sculls. The crew of James Scott, Charlie Wallis, Jared Brenssell and Angus Harper finished in 3min 32.81sec, beating Avon Rowing Club by nearly 6sec. O’Connell, of the Cromwell Rowing Club, finished second in the masters single sculls in 4min 33.38sec.
