Christmas Day weather mixed

Children in Dunedin and Balclutha may need to wait for showers to clear before they can play with their  presents outside on Christmas Day.

But the toys will get some use  on Boxing Day as the sun is set to shine across Otago.

MetService forecaster Tuporo Marsters said  it would be fine with southwesterly winds in Dunedin this morning.

The wind would ease in the late morning with cloud in the afternoon and isolated showers developing in the evening.

Tomorrow, Christmas Day,  would begin with cloudy conditions and isolated showers in Dunedin,  before becoming mainly fine in the afternoon.Boxing Day in the city would be mainly fine with high cloud and northerly winds developing.

Oamaru was expected to hit 18degC today with cloud increasing in the afternoon followed by evening showers.

Christmas Day in Oamaru was expected to be fine with a high of 19degC,  some cloud and a southerly breeze.

"The showers that hit Dunedin miss Oamaru."

On Boxing Day in Oamaru, northerly winds would develop and the cloud would disappear making for a fine day with an expected high of 18degC.

Fine weather was forecast for Queenstown and Wanaka today and  was expected to continue into Christmas Day, with light winds.

Fine weather was expected to continue  in  the resort towns on  Boxing Day with high cloud and light winds. 

Queenstown was expected to have a high of 25degC and Wanaka 26degC.

Fine weather with light winds was forecast for  Alexandra and Cromwell on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

It would be fine in Balclutha today, becoming cloudy in the afternoon with showers expected overnight.

Christmas Day in Balclutha would start with an early morning shower before becoming fine in the afternoon.

The fine weather would continue  on Boxing Day with high cloud and a northwesterly and a high of 17degC.
