Otago's "extraordinarily supportive" community has done it again, donating nearly $60,000 towards its rescue helicopter through the recent Chopper Appeal.

The appeal, which covered 15 rescue helicopter trusts nationwide, raised $1,450,475, nearly 28% more than the previous year.

Westpac covered the campaign costs.

Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust chairman Ross Black said the contribution of $59,849 was "brilliant" and again highlighted how "extraordinarily supportive" the Otago community was of the rescue helicopter service.

It had been a fortunate few weeks for the trust which was presented about $78,000 in Government funding last week and $35,000 from fundraising in Lawrence, he said.

The rescue crew would now work on its "wish list" of improvements and the trust board would consider them at a meeting in a month.

Some of the "enhancements" being considered were replacements for the old specialised patient stretchers, emergency transport for pilots, similar to that of paramedics, and to increase safety and other rescue and life-support equipment, Mr Black said.

The Government funding would be shared with St John Ambulance as it related to medical emergency work, he said.

The trust needed to raise about $400,000 annually to support the costs of running the service.
