Course at theatre funded by council

FortuneTheatre has been given $3000 by the Dunedin City Council to hold an ''intensive'' three-week course next year.

Theatre spokesman Jordan Dickson said the council gave a $3000 grant to the theatre to hold an ''intensive'' three-week summer school with teacher John Bolton, from February 20.

In the final week, students would create short autobiographical pieces to be shown as part of Dunedin Fringe 2017 on March 10 and 11.

Students will explore their personal histories using different theatrical styles, including melodrama, storytelling and clown, Mr Dickson said.

Mr Bolton trained at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

The Melbourne-based teacher had received awards for directing and teaching, including two Melbourne Green Room Awards, the 2002 Kenneth Myer Medallion for services to Theatre in Victoria, and the 2005 Teaching Excellence Award at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Theatre artistic director Jonathon Hendry said working with Mr Bolton at the John Bolton School in 2014 was ''a boon''.

''It allowed me to grow with others, feel new sensations, awaken imagination and experience a lot about myself at 49 that was joyfully familiar as well as much that felt totally new.''
