Queenstown police have welcomed the public responses to an alleged racist incident.

Sergeant Steve Watt said police were following a couple of leads after releasing images of two females of interest.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances around an assault, in which a 30-year-old Australian tourist had coffee ''poured over her head'' after challenging a woman making derogatory comments about Asian tourists.

Sgt Watt described the public response as positive and confirmed police had received a couple of phone calls.

''We have a number of inquiries that we are following up. Hopefully, as a result we will identify them.''

He stressed racist behaviour would not be tolerated.
