Hunting store planned for Cromwell

A hunting and fishing retail store is to be built in Cromwell, creating employment for up to six people.

Construction of Central Otago Hunting and Fishing is to begin soon and opening is planned for November.

The store will be built on a site between Sargood St and Nichols gardening store at the intersection of State Highways 6 and 8b and employ three full-time and three part-time staff from the area.

Allan Millar's Hunting and Fishing owner and co-owner of Central Otago Fishing and Hunting Scott Kunac said the project had been two years in the planning.

An original site proposed at the nearby Freeway Orchard was rejected as it was not zoned retail.

"Central Otago is a strong area for hunting and fishing and we have a lot of good customers up in that area."

The "destination" store would have 600sq m of retail space and an interior design and concept similar to Allan Millar's in Dunedin, he said.

An "impressive" gun room would be a self-contained, secure room which exceeded any safety regulations, he said.

"Short of a nuclear event, you would have trouble getting in there."

While based in Cromwell, the store's position would allowed it to cater for all of Central Otago and for those heading to the West Coast, Mr Kunac said.

It would include a large parking area, with space for boats and trailers.
