A young soldier has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing incident at Tekapo Military Camp, near Timaru, yesterday.
The accused appeared briefly before Judge Raoul Neave in the Timaru District Court and was remanded in custody for assessment at Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch.
The soldier, who has interim suppression of his name, was also charged with burglary.
No pleas were entered and bail was not sought.
The charges relate to an incident where a private was attacked by another soldier and received stab wounds to his face and body, about 1am yesterday.
The injuries were minor, and he was back at the army training area by yesterday evening.
The accused allegedly fled the scene and was picked up by police after emerging from a Mary Burn property, at about 9.30am.
