NZSki is being investigated by the Department of Labour after an incident on Sunday, June 5, at Coronet Peak, when a skier was injured while boarding the skifield's newly-opened Meadows Express chairlift.
A 32-year-old woman and experienced skier was trapped by a safety bar, which caught her helmet as she was boarding the lift with her husband and 5-year-old daughter.
The weight of the bar pushed her head downwards and tore ligaments in her neck.
She was taken by ambulance to Lakes District Hospital and then to Southland Hospital, Invercargill.
A spokesperson for the Department of Labour confirmed it is investigating.
NZSki chief executive James Coddington told the Otago Daily Times the company took the incident very seriously.
"We will conduct our own investigation alongside the one by the Department of Labour, and we will also get the lift manufacturer to check the lift. We will continue to do everything we can to keep the lift safe," Mr Coddington said.
The new four-seat Meadows Express chairlift, was installed before the skifield's opening day [today] and opened on June 4.
It can transport up to 2000 people an hour to the beginner slopes and the lower part of the intermediate runs.
