Almost 700 children from 24 schools across the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts strove to outrun, out-jump and out-throw other competitors at the Central Otago Primary Schools Athletics Championships in Alexandra yesterday.
Organiser Mick Enright said the number of children increased every year as the school rolls in the districts rose.
''It's always very successful. It ends up being a really huge event.''
Fewer records were broken than in past years, he said.
''But the ones that were broken were amazing. Some girls took many seconds off record times.
''Every year, we have some really impressive kids.''
The region's best will compete in the Otago Championships Athletics in Dunedin on November 15.
