About 2000 people have turned up for a day at the races at Wingatui Racecourse making it a more quiet affair than predicted.

Some 5000 people were expected to attend the event held to coincide with the Melbourne Cup.

Outfits featuring ornate fascinators to puffer jackets and everything in between were worn by race-goers on the warmish 15degC day.

The students were noticeably confined as their tent was isolated some distance away from the rest.

The friendly attendees have started to get stumbly as the race day libations sink in.

The winners of the annual Fashions in the Field competition will be announced soon.

Patchy rain is expected to come through in the afternoon.

A Dunedin Railways train will make three trips to the racecourse from the Railway Station and two return trips.
