Two men put on remand

A Cromwell man was remanded in custody after appearing in the Alexandra District Court yesterday to face five charges, including three of assault.

Matthew Paden Messerschmidt (23), was charged with assault with intent to injure, assaulting a female and assault, all at Cromwell, on June 13.

He also faced charges of resisting arrest and intentional damage, both at Cromwell, on June 13.

Counsel Tim Cadogan said Messerschmidt consented to remain in custody.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said police would have opposed any bail application.

Messerschmidt appeared before justice of the peace Rory Gollop, who remanded him to appear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow.

Escaping charge

Raymond David Brown (50), unemployed, of Cromwell, was remanded on bail until June 30 on a charge of escaping from custody at Cromwell on June 12.

Sgt Kerrisk said police opposed bail because the man had breached bail conditions several times.

Brown was on bail for a charge of assault and one of his bail conditions was a ban on alcohol.

During a bail check at his home at the weekend, Brown had admitted drinking and was arrested after a breath test.

When the police officer went to her vehicle to get more breath-testing equipment, the defendant left her custody, Sgt Kerrisk said.

Mr Cadogan said the defendant was unaware he had been arrested.

While the officer was getting more breath-testing equipment, the defendant had gone out to the back of his home to smoke.
