Wickets fell at regular intervals but Otago takes a slight upper hand into the second day of its pre-season two-day game against Canterbury in Rangiora.
The start of the match was delayed until 1pm due to wet run-ups, but Otago quickly got into its work at the bowling crease when play got under way, bowling tight lines and restricting run-scoring opportunities while methodically taking wickets
Canterbury could not gain any semblance of momentum, slumping to 44 for four then to 52 for six as Jack Hunter (two for eight) helped the Otago attack run through Canterbury's top and middle order.
Seven bowlers were used as the sides made full use of their 14-man squads, and all seven Otago bowlers took wickets as Canterbury was dismissed for 95 in the 42nd over.
Otago got off to a slow start, losing Brad Wilson to a run-out without scoring, before Ryan Duffy was struck on the forearm and retired hurt on four. Duffy's arm was being X-rayed last night to determine the extent of the damage.
Anaru Kitchen (25) and Sean Eathorne (26) got some time at the crease on a difficult track but they and Derek de Boorder (six) were dismissed before bad light stopped play with Otago at 74 for five.
