ORFU snubs RSA choir for 'Brook finale

Because of the special historical significance of the June 19 All Blacks sold-out test match against Wales being Carisbrook's final test hosting, I contacted the Otago Rugby Football Union some time ago and suggested one of our great male choirs should sing both the Welsh and the New Zealand anthems.

I was pleased to learn the RSA Male Choir would be singing.

I recently met one of the choir's officials and congratulated him and the choir as the test occasion merited special renditions of the anthems, especially as international television will focus on the test, Carisbrook, Dunedin and New Zealand.

However, the choir member told me the ORFU has now reneged on its decision and intends engaging soloists.

I have told several people about this and all agreed it was a dumb decision by the ORFU.

In disbelief, I contacted the ORFU again and it confirmed the change.

With respect to whichever soloists are being engaged, it is imperative that the choir sings as it will be vital to the night's special atmosphere.

Also for the reason that the Welsh players (and supporters) will sing enthusiastically, as usual, and show up our All Blacks - who will not sing, as usual.
