A teenager described as an excellent ambassador for her school and the Teviot community has won the 2010 TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award.

Breiana Bennetts (17) is deputy head pupil of Roxburgh Area School.

The award forms part of the TrustPower Central Otago District Community Awards and recognises secondary school pupils' service to the school and community.

TrustPower community relations representative Melanie Tavendale said Breiana was hard-working and well-respected.

"Breiana has a real passion for the Roxburgh area and an ability to relate well with both her peers and adults.

Her maturity shines through in everything she does.

Breiana is a real asset to this community," she said.

Breiana is head of the student council at her school, a member of the school's Formal Committee, marketing director for the Young Enterprise company, organises huis and wanangas at the school and has restarted the kapahaka group.

She coaches volleyball and netball and co-ordinated the "Get Dotted" events held in Roxburgh last year.

Roxburgh Area School principal Gary Pasco said Breiana had strong leadership potential.

"Breiana is keen to get involved in things and as a result has to juggle many commitments."

The award carries $500 prize money, with $250 going to the pupil and $250 to a community group of her choice.

The other finalists for the award were Annalyse Shaw, of Cromwell College and Rosie Whiting, of Dunstan High School.
