Family wins $2.8m Lotto

A Queenstown family will soon be mortgage free, warmly shod and jetting off on holiday after winning $2.8 million in this week's Big Wednesday draw.

The "excited" Queenstown family flew to Wellington yesterday, escaping the flood waters encroaching on the town's centre, to claim the prize package made up of $2 million cash, an Audi R8, a Porsche Cayenne, a Visa Platinum card loaded with $250,000 and $250,000 cash towards luxury travel, New Zealand Lotteries spokeswoman Karen Jones said.

Queenstown's newly opened Eight to Late Foodcentre, in Fernhill Rd, sold the syndicated ticket to the mother of the family, which includes three adult children and six grandchildren. They wish to remain anonymous.

Family members planned to pay off their mortgages with their win and buy new cars, she said.

They were also looking forward to some more simple pleasures.

"I really need some new slippers," the mother said.

The family also plan to go on a big extended-family holiday.

"We can't agree on a destination, so we will just put all our favourite holiday places in a hat and randomly draw one out."
