Girl struck by van

A 9-year-old girl was flown to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries after she was struck by a van as she walked to her school bus stop yesterday.

The male van driver appeared to have been blinded by the sun at the time of the accident, about 8am, on Old Racecourse Rd, near Albert Town, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said yesterday.

It appeared the girl had been walking on the gravel verge on Old Racecourse Rd towards the bus stop on Aubrey Rd. The van had been travelling in the same direction as the girl.

The accident was a warning to motorists to be aware children were about early in the morning and to stop if blinded by low autumn or winter sun, Snr Sgt Grindell said. It was too soon to say whether the driver would face charges.

Old Racecourse Rd is in a rural residential zoned subdivision at the foot of Mt Iron, near Albert Town, and does not have footpaths.

• A woman who accidently rolled her van off the Dunmore St bridge into Bullock Creek on Tuesday night was not injured and has been issued with an infringement notice for failing to stay on the road, Senior Constable Ian Henderson said yesterday.
