"Who isn't at work this morning?" is likely to be the most asked question in Dunedin today.

For someone, going to work on a Monday morning is no longer a necessity.

And that is because this particular someone has a Lotto ticket in their possession worth $10,845,530.

Head of communications for the Lotteries Commission Karen Jones told the Otago Daily Times yesterday afternoon no-one had yet come forward to claim the prize - made up of a first division win of $1,059,968 and a Powerball jackpot of $9,785,562.

Ms Jones' first piece of advice to whoever has the winning ticket was to write their name and address on the back to make it more secure.

"You'd be amazed how many big winning tickets are presented with no identifiers on them. It always amazes us."

Winners also receive a book on how to handle their windfall.

It suggests winners put the money away for three months and give some serious thought to what they want to do with it.

Ms Jones said as well as having a big effect on someone's finances, a big win can be an emotional event.

"People have to decide who they tell."

The Dunedin prize is the biggest paid out since last October but a lot less than the biggest New Zealand lottery prize of $36.1 million paid to a Masterton ticket holder in June last year.

Saturday's winning ticket was sold at Dunedin Paper Plus in the Golden Centre Mall, off George St.

Owner Jacqui Brenssell did not know who had bought it.

"I guess they're still taking it all in and they'll probably contact the Lotteries Commission directly themselves, I would think."

The shop had sold one other first division prize, of about a million dollars, in the nine years the Brenssells had owned it.
