This week's winner is Scott MacLean, of Seacliff, for his letter praising the police for their speedy reponse, published on Thursday. He receives a copy of Lloyd Spencer Davis' Looking for Darwin, Longacre Press, $39.99.
On the afternoon of April 8, my partner was relaxing at home with our 18-month-old son when she looked out the window to see two balaclava-clad men attempting to break in to our garage.
My partner, who is six months pregnant, was obviously highly alarmed and distressed to see an invasion of our home unfolding in broad daylight.
She immediately placed a 111 call and alerted the police to the situation.
Within 20 minutes of the call being placed, the first of many police arrived on the scene and, shortly after, the dog unit had arrived with the dog tracking the offenders.
Given that we live an average of 30 minutes drive north of Dunedin, the police response to the call is nothing short of outstanding.
We have insurance to cover stolen property but it is the safety of my family that is paramount and I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the police involved for such a prompt turnout to keep my family safe.
It is incredibly comforting to know that the police can be relied upon to respond so quickly, especially to those of us residing in rural areas.
