Celebrities and newsmakers attended a gala event in New York on Tuesday (local time) night to honour Time magazine's 100 most influential people of 2017.

The annual list, which the magazine says "explores the intersection of accomplishment and renown", is divided into five categories - pioneers, artists, leaders, titans and icons.

Among those attending the gala was NFL free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick who made an appearance in the "icons" category for making headlines for his refusal to stand for the US national anthem before football games as part of a protest against racial injustice.

Fellow US sportsmen NBA star LeBron James and the NFL's New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady were both included on the "titans" list.

Actors featured on this year's list included Ryan Reynolds who is still riding a wave of popularity and influence after his acclaimed performance in superhero comedy film Deadpool, this year's best actress Oscar winner Emma Stone and The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story's Sarah Paulson who played real-life prosecutor Marcia Clark in the miniseries.

Singers Demi Lovato, who continues to raise awareness for many mental health causes and Alicia Keys, who was recently recognised by Amnesty International for her human rights activism were only a couple of the several musical artists included this year.

Shifts in politics in the last 12 months have seen the inclusion of several global leaders on the Time 100. New US President Donald Trump has made the list along with several others from his administration such as White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, United States Secretary of Defense Gen James Mattis and FBI director James Comey.

Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner are both on the list in the "pioneers" section.

Other world leaders on the list are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English wrote the profile entry for British Prime Minister Theresa May, saying he was intrigued to meet her after she took office and lead the Brexit vote.

"I learned quickly why she emerged from the Brexit aftermath as leader: she has will and she has clarity," he said.
