Smoke plumes from the South Fork fire rise above the tree line as the fire progresses from the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation to the Lincoln National Forest causing mandatory evacuations in Ruidoso, New Mexico, yesterday.

CNN reported about 5000 residents were ordered to evacuate.

The South Fork fire had grown to 1214ha yesterday, while a second fire south of Ruidoso had burnt to 809ha, New Mexico Forestry spokesman George Ducker told CNN.
