The Crown Range is closed to towing vehicles and chains are essential.

There is snow on State Highway 6 (Queenstown to Kingston)  andon the  Lindis Pass, and care is required.

Motorists in Southland should be aware black ice could form overnight and in the early morning.

Winter driving conditions exist, and motorists are advised to carry chains while travelling alpine passes.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council said on its website roads were open, but advised motorists to stay home unless they had to go somewhere.

"If you do need to take the car, make sure you have your chains and drive to the conditions. Remember - 4 wheel drives are not bullet proof."
