Class Act ten years on: Waitaki Girls' High School

Where are they now?

NICOLE MCCONE

2012: A keen tramper, McCone had also played with the Otago Netball Talent ID Squad and won the South Island Secondary Schools’ Triathlon. She aimed to work in outdoor recreation.

2022: McCone spent four years teaching physical education and health at Mt Aspiring College before moving to Christchurch Girls’ High School this year. She has a physical education degree and a master of teaching and learning (with distinction). She has  continued to play competitive netball and coached the Mt Aspiring College year 10 A team to victory at the 2018 Otago Secondary Schools Netball Tournament.

SUZY BICKERS (NEE LIND)

2012: The former successful jazz, tap and hip-hop dancer had recently returned to dance and netball after a 2010 fall resulted in a serious back injury. She hoped to be a primary school teacher or to forge a career in speech and language therapy.

2022: A year 8 teacher at Medbury Preparatory School in Christchurch, Bickers overseas the health curriculum and teaches divinity classes. She continues to be involved in music through her church, has started an outdoor louvres business with her husband and, despite thinking she would never dance or play netball again, dances for enjoyment and plays netball socially.
