Longtime Labour MP Warren Freer died this morning.
Mr Freer died after a long illness and was survived by his wife and two sons, One News reported.
Mr Freer held the Mount Albert seat from 1947 to 1981, when he retired. It was subsequently taken up by Helen Clark and is now held by Labour leader David Shearer.
He was a cabinet minister in the third Labour government in 1972 until 1975 and held trade and energy resources portfolios.
He was made a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for public services in the 1987 Queens Honours List.
