Dunedin South MP Clare Curran is happy with her responsibilities allocated yesterday by new Labour leader Andrew Little.

And she believes the forthcoming year - in which the party's MPs have to prove themselves - will provide her with good motivation.

Ms Curran was not ranked by Mr Little but retained her key interest of ICT policy, regained broadcasting, retained open government and gained associate justice and commerce.

''Having a year to prove ourselves is a good strategy. I am looking forward to getting stuck in.''

Ms Curran will have the opportunity to continue her questioning of Communications Minister Amy Adams about issues associated with the Government's ultra-fast fibre roll-out.

Ms Adams is also Minister of Broadcasting, which will give Ms Curran another chance to surpass the minister.

ICT was an increasingly important part of the New Zealand economy, and along with broadcasting was a front bench portfolio for the Government, Ms Curran said, and she was keen to make it a top priority for Labour.

''I'm passionate about public broadcasting and I am really pleased and excited to receive the full portfolio back again.''

Open government was also an increasingly important global issue, she said.

Mr Little knew Ms Curran wanted the roles and she was ''pretty pleased'' her wishes were realised, she said.
