The Labour candidate had a hard act to following, gaining the nomination ahead of sitting MP David Benson-Pope.
Despite some early nerves when National's Conway Powell was nipping at her heels, Ms Curran finished the night with a 5992 majority in the traditional Labour stronghold.
"I'm so proud to be the next MP for Dunedin South . . . I can't believe I'm saying that," a visibly emotional Ms Curran said in front of about 60 supporters at Robbies Bar in South Dunedin.
