Act to announce radical housing policy

Act New Zealand will make a radical housing policy announcement today.

While in Queenstown yesterday, ahead of this evening's ASB Great Debate, party leader Jamie Whyte criticised National's affordable housing policy announced on Sunday and Labour's long-standing promise to build 100,000 homes in 10 years, including 1000 in Queenstown.

National was heading in the right direction, he said, but was not bold enough.

''You've got a price problem and they [National] have come up with a policy that increases demand - that's peculiar,'' he said.

''We see it as a supply-side problem - there's constraint on the supply of land.''

Asked what Act might offer, he said it had more radical proposals to announce regarding the Resource Management Act and councils' planning, to liberalise the supply of residential land.

But he would not elaborate ahead of a speeches he is scheduled to give in Cromwell and Wanaka today.
