Kylee Guy is still at a loss to understand why her husband was murdered.

As she prepares to mark the second anniversary of Scott's death tomorrow, the mother of two has commented for the first time since his accused killer, his brother-in-law Ewen Macdonald, was acquitted this week, asking: "How could this happen?"

In an exclusive statement to The New Zealand Herald, she said: "Two years ago, our whole world changed forever, for me and my boys, and will never be the same.

"You are only given one life to live. Scotty was everything you could ever dream of - a loving amazing husband, the best daddy to his boys and a wonderful, caring friend.

"If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died ... We love you to the moon and back."

Her comments come after a tumultuous week, with the not-guilty verdict.

Mrs Guy said she loved her husband as much as she did when he was alive and the world she now lived in was "unfair and unbelievable".

The couple's sons, Hunter (4) and Drover (21 months), had helped her move forward.

"The boys and Scotty are my strength and the reason I get up each day.

"This is not the final chapter.

"We are not going to give up.

"We will do everything we can, so that you can finally rest in peace."

A special trust fund has been set up for Mrs Guy and her children, with the help of the Sensible Sentencing Trust, which has been supporting the family.

Mrs Guy planned to mark the anniversary of her husband's death with the support of her family.

She said she had been overwhelmed with all the messages and support she had received from people throughout New Zealand.

"There are no words to express my overwhelming gratitude and love to you all. You are all truly amazing and we will be forever grateful. Let's do this for Scotty."

After the not-guilty verdict was read, a devastated Mrs Guy shouted: "He killed my husband, he killed my husband" and left the court without commenting.

Despite his acquittal, Macdonald remains behind bars in Manawatu Prison awaiting sentence on charges he admitted at the time of his arrest.
