Troubled turboslide shut down

New Plymouth's troubled aquatic centre turboslide has been shut down by the Department of Labour over concerns about its safety.

A person who suffered a cut above the eye while using it last week was the 41st reported injury since the slide opened at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre a year ago, The Taranak Daily News reported.

There had been concerns right from the beginning, with the slide's opening delayed after a staff member suffered head and neck injuries while testing it.

Since then 215,000 people have taken a ride, with accidents representing about 0.02 per cent of the total.

New Plymouth District Council general manager of customer services, Cathy Thurston, said the council was disappointed the slide had been closed but hoped to resolve the issues and have it open again as soon as possible.

The Department of Labour's New Plymouth acting service manager, Jo Pugh, said the slide would be closed while an independent contractor assessed it.

"The council has done all we asked of them and is expecting the independent assessor's report this week," she said.

Ms Thurston said the causes of the accidents were varied and included people not following the instructions.

The turboslide is the tallest in the country, at 18.5 metres high, and claims to be the fastest.
