Treaty march ‘ultimate’ protest

A Dunedin photographer who joined tens of thousands of people in Wellington says the hīkoi was the "ultimate" protest and a beautiful display of unity.

Jill Bowie was in Wellington over the weekend, and decided to extend her stay until Hīkoi mō te Tiriti (March for the Treaty) arrived yesterday.

"I just wanted to be part of it ... as a Pākehā person — that’s how I’m able to be here, because of that treaty," she said.

She ended up about a block away from Parliament — being in the thick of it was "amazing", she said.

"Everyone was really friendly — it was a really beautiful vibe.

"I could see the Beehive but I was probably a street away and then they were turning people down to the waterfront."

There were lots of waiata and haka — "full on right from the get-go".

It was heartening to see so many people standing up for the Treaty, including a small group of people from Dunedin, she said.

"This is the ultimate [protest], I can’t image there’ll be anything this huge in my lifetime — I hope not anyway.

"All of those people filling up all of those streets ... It just shows how unified we are and that we will stand up for the Treaty."
