Police say they are not looking for a weapon after a 28-year-old man was killed on a Timaru street.
A man was today charged with murder after the victim's body was found lying face-down on York St, Seaview, about 3.50am yesterday.
Timaru man Johnny Grant Holman, 25, appeared in Timaru District Court this morning charged with murder.
He was remanded in custody until his next appearance on Monday.
The name of the victim has been suppressed until then.
South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin today said it was too early to say how the man was killed.
"It's pretty safe to say at this stage we are not looking for a weapon,'' he told APNZ.
He would not comment on whether the two men were known to each other but confirmed they were not related.
Ambulance staff yesterday found the victim unresponsive and their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
His body was removed from the scene last night and a post mortem examination was carried out in Christchurch this morning.
Mr Gaskin said police would continue to work on the investigation over the weekend.
"Hopefully the scene examination will be completed today and we'll reopen the roads later.''
A forensic pathologist and ESR staff from Christchurch examined the scene yesterday.
