Police also laid charges of dangerous driving causing injury and a charge for driving an uncertified and unsafe modified vehicle after the teenager collided with three members of a Christchurch family who were walking in central Christchurch on the evening of May 21.
Four-year old Nayan Samuel Woods died after the collision.
The car slid from side to side on the road before climbing the footpath and hitting Nayan's mother Emma Woods and her other son, six-year-old Jacob.
Jacob received multiple fractures in the collision, while Mrs Woods escaped with only minor injuries.
Mrs Woods said after the crash that she held no anger towards the teenage driver saying she did want the crash to be the defining moment in his life.
"He wasn't racing a friend. He was driving home from work. He came over to help. He was obviously devastated at the time. It would be different is he was racing or drinking," Mrs Woods said.
The driver was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on June 28.
