Blues lock Kurtis Haiu will be in court in Pukekohe this week on a serious assault charges, less than three weeks after the rugby player told his teammates he was taking indefinite leave because he had cancer.
The Super 15 star was taken into police custody after the incident in south Auckland and faced three charges -- assault on a female, assault with intent to use a weapon and common assault.
Police would not give details but Haiu's manager, Bruce Sharrock, said it was too fresh to comment, NewstalkZB reported today.
Sharrock was also reported to have said the charges did not follow a domestic incident and Haiu's wife, Frieda, was not involved.
Haiu stood down from rugby when he learned he had a cancerous tumour on a rib. He was expected to have further tests to learn more about the tumour.
Blues doctor Stephen Kara said the prognosis for Haiu was uncertain but the cancer was treatable.
