Cancer-stricken Auckland Blues lock Kurtis Haiu has been remanded on assault and weapon charges after appearing in court this morning.

The Super 15 star, who began treatment this week for cancer, appeared in Pukekohe District Court this morning accused of assaulting a female, assault with intent to use a weapon, and common assault.

He was remanded on bail until June 15.

A court official told NZPA Huia was being considered for diversion on the weapon and common assault charges and further disclosure was being sought on the male assaults female charge.

Haiu 26, who has played 53 Super rugby matches, has a cancerous tumour on his ribs and is expected to be out of rugby for at least a year while he is treated.
