RSA attacker still on the run

A woman bound and beaten in a vicious attack in Hobsonville remains shaken today, while the intruder is still on the run, say police.

Hobsonville RSA manager Maxine Corless, 62, was yesterday left bloodied and bruised when an attacker burst into the association's rooms at about 9am.

The intruder, who kept his face hidden under a hood and behind a halloween-style mask, said nothing during the attack before walking out with cash from the till.

Mrs Corless was treated for her injuries at the Waitakere District Hospital and later discharged.

The attack came on the 10th anniversary of the Mt Wellington-Panmure RSA massacre which claimed three lives.

Mrs Corless was "going okay'' today, and was heavily bruised but had no broken bones from the beating, said Detective Senior Sergeant Andy King.

"She's obviously still in a lot of shock, but she's receiving a lot of support from family and friends and RSA members. She's doing very well, she's a very brave and courageous woman, I must say.''

Police were due to interview Mrs Corless shortly after noon today.

Mr King said there had been a surge of calls from the public with leads yesterday and this morning.

"We've had probably within the vicinity of 8 to 10 calls... There's been all sorts of pieces of information coming through.''

He said police were building a clearer picture of the intruder, who they believe is a male, aged between 20 and 40 years old, and of a solid, "almost fat'' build.

"We're currently going through CCTV footage which we recovered from the RSA, and we're working through our normal procedures.... We're getting a good background and picture of what happened.''

But police still had "no idea'' what the reason or motivation behind the vicious attack was, he said.

The intruder burst into the office and began beating Mrs Corless, before dragging her along the floor into a room behind the till and tying her up.

She managed to escape, but the attacker caught her, re-bound her hands and beat her again about the face.

He was only in the building for an estimated seven to 15 minutes, Mr King said.

Police were today were today following several leads, and were hoping to release CCTV images this afternoon to the public, he said.
