Rena survives another night

The cargo vessel Rena has survived another night, while the container removal efforts are steadily continuing, says Maritime New Zealand.

Rena ran aground the Astrolabe Reef on October 5, sparking major clean-up efforts across the Bay of Plenty after spilling tonnes of oils and dozens of containers into the ocean.

Salvors have successfully removed 1350 tonnes of oil from tanks aboard the ship and are removing containers on a daily basis.

Maritime New Zealand said a total of 26 containers were removed from the vessel yesterday (Monday), bringing the total number of containers removed from the ship to 145.

Favourable weather conditions are expected to last, as targeted cleaning operations continue at Mt Maunganui today.
