Police are urging drivers to take care around schools as students prepare to head back to the classroom next month.
A campaign targeting excessive speed around schools and school bus routes would coincide with the start of the new school year, southern district highway patrol Senior Sergeant Steve Larking said.
"It's a new term and a new start for some students so we need to be extra careful with our driving habits around schools," he said.
"Some children will have received a new bike for Christmas and be riding these to school for the first time -- so please be aware of children on bikes."
Mr Larking said parents should also avoid double parking or parking on yellow lines while dropping their children off.
Speed cameras and lasers would be use to strictly enforce the speed limit within school zones, he said.
The speed of drivers overtaking stationary school buses would also be closely monitored.
Mr Larking said key risk times were 7.30am-9am and 2.30pm-4pm.
"Our aim is to prevent fatal and injury crashes involving children around schools," he said.
