The man killed in an explosion of a suspected P-lab in the south Auckland suburb of Glenbrook has been named by police.
He was 25-year-old Clint Gordon Curly, of Waiuku, 40km southwest of Auckland.
Police said the suspected clandestine lab exploded blew up about 6pm on Thursday.
Investigations into the explosion were continuing, Detective Senior Sergeant Al Symonds of Counties Manukau police said.
"It is evident that Mr Curly was in the process of manufacturing an illicit drug when a chemical process went wrong resulting in the explosion that killed him," Mr Symonds said.
Forensic tests were continuing to determine exactly which drug Mr Curly was manufacturing.
A 38-year-old man will appear in the Pukekohe District Court on Wednesday in relation to allowing premises to be used for drug manufacturing.
It was likely more charges would be be laid.
Mr Symonds said it was disappointing to hear from a number of people in the community that they knew drug activity was happening at the address, but nobody reported it to police.
"If we are to combat the scourge of methamphetamine and other harmful drugs, then we need the help of the community to do so," he said.
