Police name man killed in crash

Police have named a man killed in a collision south of Te Kuiti on Saturday.

Inspector Leo Tooman said the Serious Crash Unit was still investigating what caused the crash, which happened about 8.15am in wet conditions.

"At this stage it appears the driver of a southbound Subaru, 19-year-old Hamilton man Seth Tukino Mariu, has lost control of his car on a corner of SH4, about 11km south of the intersection with SH3 at Eight-mile Junction.

"We believe the Subaru has rotated clockwise before being struck by an oncoming BMW SUV. Mr Mariu was the sole occupant of his car and died at the scene while the female driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries.''

The death has been reported to the coroner.

Figures released today show the national road toll stands at 269 compared to 366 at the same time last year.

But Saturday's collision was the 43rd fatal road crash in the Waikato so far this year and the 51st death.

Mr Tooman said 28 of the 43 fatal crashes involved vehicles not keeping left or staying in their lane.

He warned drivers to allow themselves plenty of time to travel this holiday season.
