Police examine Nelson homicide flat

Police are continuing to examine a Nelson flat where a woman was found dead on Thursday.

A homicide investigation was launched after the 39-year-old woman was found dead in her street-front unit on Salisbury Rd, Richmond, about 6.30pm.

It is believed a family member discovered her body after she did not turn up to work yesterday.

Detective Inspector Geoff Jago of Nelson police said a scene examination continued overnight.

Power was cut to houses and businesses in the immediate vicinity for about two hours last night to assist forensic investigators, he said.

Interviews with friends and associates of the woman would continue today.

Police would release a name after a post mortem examination was completed.

Nelson police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn yesterday said the woman had recently come out of a relationship.

The incident was not believed to be a home invasion and the house was secure.

A close neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she did not see or hear anything suspicious.

She said a man and woman had moved into the unit about 18 months ago.

"I had my doubts about them ... They didn't speak to neighbours a lot, and they haven't been here very long.''

The discovery of the body came just hours before a man in his 20s was found dead in the middle of a Timaru street.

South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said the man was found on York St, Seaview, about 3.50am yesterday.

The death was being treated as suspicious.

Ambulance services found the man lying face-down in the centre of the road.

He was unresponsive and their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, police said.

The scene was yesterday examined by a forensic pathologist and ESR staff who had travelled to Timaru from Christchurch.

Police were yesterday hopeful a scene examination would be completed so the man's body could be removed.

A post-mortem examination would be carried out in Christchurch.
