Plumbers, gas fitters and drain-layers possess a unique set of skills and two Kiwi companies are mobilising the industry in New Zealand and Australia to put them to good use in Christchurch.
Letsfixit is a volunteer organisation set up by plumbing and heating company Leap Australasia Ltd owner Jay Webster and advertising agency Designworks chief executive officer Sven Baker.
Leap marketing manager Josie Skipper said Mr Baker was in Christchurch when the earthquake hit and, while overwhelmed by the experience, he wanted to do something to help its citizens.
The organisation was set up to "mobilise plumbers" to help people "get back up and running".
A call for volunteers from New Zealand and Australia went out two weeks ago and about 70 had signed on so far.
Transport, accommodation and equipment for smaller jobs were being supplied, with tradesmen just "giving up as much of their time as they can" to help.
The organisation had been lucky with support from Interislander to ferry North Islanders south, and Canterbury residents offering beds in their houses for workers.
No Australians had come over yet, but flights would be negotiated with airlines.
About 150 Christchurch residents had asked for help so far, with a plumber being matched to each request.
"Most people have such small problems," Ms Skipper said.
The organisation would operate for as long as it was needed and its website will soon accept donations of money to help with costs and equipment. www.letsfixit.org.
