Looking after the family of the person who died at a Christchurch workplace is a priority, the business says.

Police, Hato Hone St John and Fire and Emergency NZ rushed to Fletcher Building's Humes facility in Carmen Rd about 12.40pm on Tuesday.

Police said one person was found dead at the commercial premises in the suburb of Hornby.

"Police will make inquiries into the circumstances of the death on behalf of the Coroner."

A spokesperson for Fletcher Building confirmed a member of its team had died.

The circumstances were unclear.

"We can confirm a member of our team passed away at our Humes facility in Hornby, Christchurch, on Tuesday.

"Our current priorities are looking after our teammate's family and making sure the Humes teams are well cared for and supported. We are unable to say anything more at this stage.”

St John sent two ambulances, a rapid response unit, and an operations manager to the scene.

Humes is a leading manufacturer and supplier of systems for managing water and other utilities, primarily in urban environments and roading.
