From a $5000 doer-upper in Hope St, Mataura, to an Auckland residential property valued at $9.65 million; welcome to the extremes of the New Zealand property market.
Information released to the Otago Daily Times reveal the title of cheapest residential house sold in New Zealand for the year ended June 30 went to a $5000 villa in Southland.
Judy Lousley, of Twizel, is the proud owner of the cheapest residential property sold in the last year - in Hope St, Mataura.
Ms Lousley purchased her former childhood home for the princely sum of $5000 as part of a private sale earlier this year.
"It is in a bit of a state so I am not sure what I am going to do with it," she said.
The pre-1914 wooden villa comes with 1663sqm of land and has a current valuation of $8000.
Gore District Council Mayor Tracy Hicks said Mataura had been through some tough times in previous years, but "its star is now in the ascendancy".
The district was performing well, thanks to the dairy industry, and was always looking for more people who wanted to take advantage of the opportunities in the area, he said.
"We have cultural, sporting and heritage facilities that are second to none, so why wouldn't you want to move here . . . plus if you want your son to be an All Black halfback you should move to Mataura."
Former All Black Justin Marshall, and current All Black Jimmy Cowan both grew up in Mataura.
The title of the most expensive residential home sold over the last year went to a 2610sq m property on Hanene St, St Heliers, Auckland.
The 1930s five-bedroom brick house, sold in July last year for $9,650,000, is believed to be owned by an Auckland property developer.
The title of cheapest house sold in Otago went to two properties - one in Christchurch St, Kaitangata, and the other in Durham St, Tapanui.
Both homes sold for $40,000.
The most expensive residential home sold in Otago went to a Lewis Rd property at Kelvin Heights, Queenstown. The home was sold last year for $3,650,000.
Built in the 1990s, the architecturally-designed waterfront home includes its own jetty and swimming pool.
