Murderer's sentence cut from 16 to 15 years

A man jailed for at least 16 years for beating a man to death has had his sentence cut by one year.

Daniel Houma, who was 19 when he murdered 37-year-old Thomas Martin in the Maybury Reserve in Glen Innes in April 2006, was given a life sentence with the 16-year minimum.

He was also jailed for six years and nine months, to be served concurrently, for assaulting a security guard in the Glen Innes shopping precinct shortly after attacking Mr Martin.

The original sentence was at least two years more than Crown prosecutors had called for.

A Court of Appeal hearing on October 16 found the 16-year minimum sentence to be too long and reduced it to 15 years.
