A 37-year-old Conifer Grove man accused of murdering a child in South Auckland overnight is due to appear in court.
The man was arrested after police found a child dead in his car in the early hours of Monday.
He spoke to staff at Manukau police station at about 1am, before officers found the child.
The man has been charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but police have said he will appear in Manukau District Court on Monday afternoon charged with murder.
He was expected to appear before Judge Ngaroma Tahana.
Police said the man was known to the child the child's family.
A post-mortem was to be carried out this week, police said. Victim Support was speaking to the child's mother and family.
Court documents revealed the alleged offending took place on Sunday in East Tamaki.
