More Rena debris in sea

The stern section of the stricken container ship Rena moved overnight and more containers and debris went into the sea.

A flight over the wreck at Astrolabe Reef of the Bay of Plenty coast noticed the change, Maritime New Zealand said today.

An unknown quantity of containers and more debris, including timber, went into sea.

The debris field was moving east-southeast from the wreck, prompting a navigation warning.

Salvors and Maritime New Zealand were closely monitoring the situation and teams were ready to respond if needed.

The stern section of the Rena slipped over the edge of the reef after coming away from the bow during bad weather in January.

The bow remains firmly wedged on the reef, where it has been since the Rena grounded in October.
