A man has been shot by police in Christchurch overnight.
Police responded to reports of suspicious behaviour on the corner of St Marks St and St Lukes St, in Woolston, about 2am.
While patrolling the area, they came upon a vehicle with two people inside, including a man known to police.
Police recognised the passenger in the car when they went to talk to the pair.
The passenger then allegedly presented a firearm and police fired shots at him.
Officers gave the man first aid immediately and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital.
The man has been arrested and will be taken into custody once released from hospital.
The driver of the vehicle is assisting police with their inquiries.
Police weren't injured in the incident.
An investigation has commenced and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
